Sporting Gijón v Real Madrid – Preview : Can Preciado Wipe The Grin Off Mourinho’s Face Again?

Sometimes you wonder if you are living a dream of sorts. Real Madrid and their fans are experiencing such a time. After having to endure the agony of being behind Barcelona for three years, Los Blancos have the chance to go into El Clasico and come out as table toppers irrespective of the result. Beating Barcelona will give them a mammoth six point advantage with a game in hand, which will automatically make Real Madrid the Liga favourites, provided they can beat Sporting Gijón at El Molinón.

RojiBlancos have the distinction of ending quite a few hopes and fairy tale successes. Last season, they beat Real Madrid at their home, Santiago Bernabéu, and effectively ended their chances of vying for the league. In defeating so, Sporting Gijón also became the only team in more than nine years and 150 matches to defeat Jose Mourinho at home.

Currently, Sporting are struggling, as always, and are languishing in the relegation zone.
Team News and Tactical Brief
Sporting Gijón

Sporting are known for their passionate set of fans. They are not like the usual club fans who cheer when the team does well and boo when the things are not going great. These are real fans – the same fans whom the usually demure Lionel Messi called ‘an example to supporters everywhere’.

Visiting El Molinón can be an intimidating experience for the away teams. Combine this with the image of the intimidating Preciado and his physical team, Sporting can be a tough team to beat. The fans love Preciado, the man responsible for bringing Sporting up to the first division and who has managed to retain his best players.

Last time, Real Madrid visited Sporting, the home team put up an incredibly brave fight before going down 0-1, after the infamous verbal duel between Mourinho and Preciado.

And then, they went to Madrid and beat them. Pablo, their goal keeper was incredible in that historic game.Their central defense pairing of Botia and Hernandez delivered a world-class performance keeping Real Madrid at bay. Ronaldo and co. will have to encounter the same pairing this time too.

Sporting will play a physical game as they are smart enough to figure that they can’t beat Real Madrid at their own game. Real Madrid’s defense needs to be alert as the midfield trio of Trejo, Castro and Cuevas are capable of producing some real moves in the oppositions half.

Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has a big head ache ahead of him. Alonso is suspended for the clash which means that Real Madrid will have a huge creative void to fill. Last year, against Sporting at Bernabeu, Alonso was missing and Mourinho admitted that it was very difficult to break down the opposition’s defense.

With Sahin fit, it can provide some respite to Mourinho but it remains to be seen how much influence Sahin can exert on a game which is sure to get physical and dirty. Khedira needs to play the anchor role to perfection and reduce the pressure on Sahin.

Arbeloa is still injured and Lass can start for Madrid as the right back. Kaka is back in training but will be among the substitutes. Benzema may make the cut ahead of Higuain.

Breaking down the Sporting defense can be a very difficult task. Sporting stay deep and look to attack on the counter denying space to their opponents. Real Madrid need to convert their chances and ensure that they take all three points.

Probable Starting Lineup (4-2-3-1): Casillas(GK); Lass, Pepe, Ramos, Marcelo; Sahin, Khedira; Ronaldo, Ozil, Di Maria; Benzema
Trivia

Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Rafa Benitez and co. toiled hard. But, could not achieve it. 107 managers tried. They tried for nine years. They failed. Only Manolo Preciado succeeded.
El Molinón stadium is the oldest professional football ground in Spain.
Raul became the leading goal scorer in Real Madrid’s history, moving ahead of Alfredo Di Stéfano, when he scored his 308th club goal against Sporting.
In 2002, Preciado’s wife died from cancer. Two years later, his 15-year old son (one of two the couple had) was killed in a car crash. Preciado later claimed about the incidents: “I could have shot myself or I could have carried on”. On 20 April 2011, his father, also named Manuel, died after being run over in Santander.

TheHardTackle’s PLAYER TO WATCH OUT FOR
Sami Khedira (Real Madrid).

With Alonso suspended, Sami Khedira will be the focus of attention for the opposition. The German international has played in almost every match alongside Alonso and has proved his worth. But, it remains to be seen how he can tackle a tough away fixture against Sporting Gijon in the absence of Alonso.

Real Madrid depend a lot on the deep lying midfielders to initiate attacks or shield defence. While there are hardly any doubts about the defensive prowess of Khedira, the absence of his more illustrious teammate gives him the perfect platform to prove his play making abilities as well
